This post contains major spoilers for Captain America: The Winter Soldier, you have been warned.
After the pilot went out for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D, it’s fair to say that I was less than impressed. In fact, it took almost until the mid-season break until the show became a consistently worthwhile watch and now that we’re finally getting into the good stuff, we see the entire organisation collapse upon itself in the latest of the Marvel movies, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, spelling the end of S.H.I.E.L.D as we know it.
So where does that leave Coulson and his team? It seems to me that there’s only one logical explanation.
The first series will be drawing to a climactic resolution within the next few weeks and so far a lot of people have been discussing what the aftermath of CA:TWS will mean for the show’s second series – I would wager that the show won’t be returning in Autumn… At least not this Autumn.
We already know about the Netflix deal that will see 4 new Marvel properties adapted for the subscription service, plus there are whispers of a separate TV show following Peggy Carter and Howard Stark during the early days of S.H.I.E.L.D and if Feige and co. continue to grow the cinematic universe at this rate, people are going to either lose track or lose interest – if not both.
We heard more about S.H.I.E.L.D’s inception in CA:TWS and it would be an interest to see how deeply-rooted Hydra’s infiltration goes.
I’m not saying that the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D finale will be the last time we see the team, but treating the series as a stand-alone story rather than dragging it out over 6 seasons seems smart to me.
Looking at the bigger picture, I’d like to see S.H.I.E.L.D replaced by S.W.O.R.D (Sentient World Observation and Response Department) – their extra-terrestrial counterpart.
With the groundwork already laid by the Chitauri, Asgardian’s and the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy – it would make sense that Fury, Hill and the rest of the non-corrupt agents would build something with protocols in place for alien encounters
What do you think? Will Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D be back in October? If not, who would you like to see replacing it on the Winter scheduling?
